Course Structure & Content

              Advice is offered on how to introduce the ‘Read and Type’ course to a class, group or individual;

able students can then continue, by themselves or with a friend, with the minimum of supervision

Guidance on posture and wrist position at the keyboard helps to avoid future health hazards

Use of delete keys is prohibited from the beginning so that poor fingering and errors can be noted

A keyboard chart gives students confidence to press keys without reference to the keyboard
Letters are made into words as soon as possible
Virtually all exercises have illustrations to relieve tension which concentration can cause
The course is set out as follows: –

Section 1

Fingering for the middle line of letters, capital letters and the full stop is taught

This important section incorporates the Home Keys from which fingers move to designated letters

Section 2

Fingering for the top line of letters, the question mark and the hyphen is taught

Section 3

Fingering for the bottom line of letters and the comma is introduced, also fingering for numbers on the top line

Final instructions give practise in manoeuvering the cursor when using the delete keys

Each section starts at Exercise 1. The sample exercises shown are in sequence

Instructions for typing each exercise are usually given in two stages

I usually asks for each set of letters or word to be typed with no errors before going to the next

II usually asks for each line or sentence to be typed with no errors before going to the next

A test is given at the end of each set of letter exercises.  Tests have a common format

As the course progresses, spelling, pluralisation and Roman numerals are covered in the exercises

Word collecting offers an opportunity to learn how to file in alphabetical order

The sturdy A5 Worksheet File has exactly the same content as the free standing A5 Book

The file has different coloured paper for each section which facilitates the correct return of exercises to the Worksheet File

The benefits of filing in numerical order and colour coding in a retrieval system become apparent

All worksheets are printed on quality paper

Section 1 worksheets are printed on A4 paper.  When folded to stand, the instructions are displayed opposite exercises

Sections 2 and 3 are printed on A5 paper with instructions on the reverse side of exercises

Working at the rate of one set of exercises per letter per week students should be able to complete the course

in 3 to 4 months according to age, ability and application

(An adult could learn to type in two weeks!)

The Book and Worksheet File, ideally, are used together by teacher and class respectively

Permission to copy exercises is given, in writing, if both editions are purchased

The exercises must be used only for classwork or homework

Feedback is always welcome

Please do not hesitate to ask for advice, for example, on how to run the course in the

classroom, as an after-school activity or when the number of computers available is limited
